I told myself this year that I wouldn’t go all crazy about Donut’s birthday like I did last year. So what did I do instead? I had TWO parties! I know, I know.
Really though, I didn’t intend it to be that way. The first party was on Monday and co-hosted by 2 other moms in a fairly new play group that I’ve joined. {And might I add that I’ve really made some good connections in this play group and have really been welcomed into the group? Finally!}
Anyways, 2 of the other children in the group had birthdays the same week as Donut’s so we decided to throw a party for all 3 kids. It was so much fun! We had a waffle sandwich bar for the moms and kids and I made mini cupcakes for everyone. We had a wonderful turnout and I think Donut had a great time. Here she is singing karaoke with an ice cream cone.

On Saturday my parents drove into town and we invited some cousins and neighbors for a small party. Even though it was small, I still feel like I prepared as much for a party of 50 people as I did for a party of 10.
A small part of me kept feeling like I did “nothing special” because I didn’t go all out like I did last year, but the truth of the matter is that it was special. It was special because Donut was celebrated and she had a lot of fun. A party doesn’t have to be big and fancy and themed in order to be special. I needed to take the pressure off of myself to have everything perfect and grandiose and just enjoy my daughter and let her have fun.

And overall? I know she did. And I did too.

Yay! This post makes me happy on so many levels! I am thrilled that you are feeling at home in your play group! I am tickled that Donut had such a great birthday!
It is hard not to go all out for our kids. They’re just so darn special!

Thanks! I’m really grateful for this new group.
She’s SO cute! Yes, what’s important is that she had fun, and she was with people who love her. What more could one ask for? (well, more cake, but that’s another matter)

Haha, more cake is definitely a good idea!
I love her happy face with the cupcakes! And the singing picture. And the other picture, while I’m at it. Glad she had two great parties! And at their ages, I always feel like a bigger fancier party can be too overwhelming. I bet she was able to enjoy these – and hopefully you were too!

Good point about a big party being overwhelming. For D, especially I think smaller is better.
Can I come party with you? I want a waffle sandwich. And to give you and D a big hug.

You can party with us anytime.
The expression on her face said it all! She had an amazing birthday, two small parties is always better than one big one, right?

Yes, I think 2 small parties were actually just great!
So happy to hear that you found a playgroup that you like!
Every birthday is special- huge celebration or not!

Yes, that’s the realization I came to at last–it’s always special no matter what you do.
I put too much pressure on myself for things like birthdays as well, but look how happy she looks! That’s all that matters.
You’re right–it’s how she feels about it that matters. I put waaaay too much pressure on myself and I tell myself it’s ok to just relax and let her have fun!
Happy birthday, Donut!

Two parties for Donut turning two! That sounds wonderful. I would love to have fun with you ladies and my little ladies. I am so happy that you found a playgroup that you mesh with.

It would be a lot of fun if you and your girls could come hang out with us.
Happy Birthday, Donut!
Thank you!
How adorable is Donut? She’s getting so big and her smile is just beautiful. I’ve always been one for smaller parties and get togethers because I think, in the end everyone enjoys it more.

Thank you Susi. I can hardly believe how grown up she looks! And you’re right about the smaller parties–they really are more fun.
